Chapter 1 Questions

In this part of the class you will receive credit for homework by discussing a topic, of your choice, on the class blog page.  In chapter one we covered a variety of topics relating to the fundamental science skills.  Section 1.1 encompassed “What is science,” section 1.2 covered “Using a Scientific Approach,” section 1.3 was “Measurement,” and 1.4 was “Presenting scientific data.”  I want you to select 2 of the following topics and write a paragraph on each one.  You must cite your sources and show web links for proper citation from outside sources.  Remember the plagiarism agreement and your commitment to honesty.

  1. Science and technology are related because advances in one lead to advances in the other. By having new and improved technology you had to do scientific experiments to have. By performing scientific studies on how to make a computer faster, you are having advances in technology. They are both related because they both rely on each other.

    Most of technology is based on science, particularly physics, chemistry, biology, and other sciences that deal with the study, measurement, and understanding of natural events. The term natural science is used to differentiate those fields that use the scientific method to study nature from the social sciences, which use the scientific method to study human behavior and society. Physical science relies on key concepts and theories, each of which explains and/or models a particular part of the behavior of nature.

    Manipulated variable is the variable one changes in an experiment. A good experiment will test more than one of these .Responding variable is the variable that changes as a result changes made in the manipulated variable. Data communication is very important because it is necessary if a scientist wants to re conduct or further study an experiment.Peer review is the process of subjecting an author’s work, research or ideas to the inspection of others who are specialists in the same field. Peer review requires a community of experts in a certain field, who are qualified to perform impartial review.

  3. science and technology are related. In the sense that when you come up with new technology you also open new opertunities for science. Because with new technology you get new science studies as well.

    Compare and Contrast precision and accuracy?
    To compare the two terms, (Accuracy and Precision)Its quite simple. when you look up both nouns in a dictionary they represent each term as a synonym for the other. To complete something with accuracy you must use precision. Although contrasting these terms is a little more difficult. I can only think of an example i discussed with my mom. You can measure something with accuracy, or to the exact measure. Precision is the actual act of measuring or the skill. it is truthfully very hard to contrast these two terms but that is the way that I see it.

    A. Since manipulative means to change, a manipulative variable is one that you manipulate or change to control an outcome. This relates to a responding variable because the responding one is in a way the results. For example if making bread, flour could be a manipulated variable because controlling its amount will control how the overall bread turns out. That would leave the bread as the responding variable because it responds to the different changes of the manipulated variable. I see the two related as a sort of cause and effect thing.

    B. Communication of data is very important because if things weren’t communicated then results would never be known. Also some data that has already been discovered may be needed for part of another experiment. If that data couldn’t be communicated the experiment would never be successful.

    C. Peer Review is a very helpful process. It can help to correct mistakes that you may not see yourself. Also it gives you feedback so you can better perform experiments.

  5. Scientific theories vs. Scientific laws

    Scientific theories are theories, they can and have in the past been proven wrong. Scientific laws are experiments or facts that have been proven correct, they will never change. For example Newton’s three laws of motion, they are accurate and when tested will prove right every time. Also the big bang theory, it is indeed only a theory and has not been proven correct, therefore it will remain only a theory. These two are completely different and it is important that we remember the difference.

    Accuracy vs. precision

    Accuracy and precision are two different questions that will require two different answers. Accuracy is the precise amount, this is extremely important to know for experiments and every day life. Precision is how close you are to the accuracy, also vital information for many of your daily activities. Whether your measuring the accurate amount of prescription drugs you can take or getting a precise amount of water into your baking pan you will need to use them at one point and you need to be able to tell the difference.

The two branches develop new discoveries using each others already found discoveries. So yes, they are related in ways.

    The difference between accuracy and precision is that precision is a guage of how exact a measurement is and accuracy is the closeness of a measurement to the actual or true measurement. There are many guages that tell you a measurement (ex. a digital clock.)

  8. Science and technology are related because there would not be technology with out science there would not be any technology, no computers, cell phone, or any of that.
    The importance of science is because if we did not have it there would not be alot of things that we use on a daily basic.
    Well, both accuracy and precision are synonyms for each other meaning how they both measure something.
    The importance peer review is so that you can not only present your lab experiment with them but, they can correct you if they think that you have made a mistake in any of your observations that you have made.

    1.2 – Differences & Importance’s

    a. Describe the steps in a scientific method? There are a total of 6 steps in the scientific method. The first step is identifying the problem in which you want to do an experiment on. Second, is to research the problem. Third, you make a hypothesis, which is a guess of what you think the problem is. Forth, test the hypothesis while observing and recording what goes on. And last, you arrive at a conclusion; in other words, you judge the results of your experiment.

    b. Compare and contrast facts, scientific theories, and scientific laws? A Scientific Theory is a well-tested explanation for a set of observations or experimental results. The Scientific Law is a statement that summarizes a pattern found in nature. As you can see they’re similar but not exact. One states a well-tested experiment, while the other has to do with a summary describing a pattern in nature. So they both state descriptions/explanations of their objects/experiments.

    c. Explain the importance of models in science? Models help us see details that we couldn’t see before. It describes visually, not vocally. It’s like fashion models. They wear the clothes, so we can see the details and the shape of the object. Because when the clothes are hanging we can’t really see the shape that is possesses on one’s body.

    d. Explain the importance of safety in science? You always want to make sure your following the LAB safety rules. You never know when something’s going to explode or fall over, so you need to know what to do incase anything happens.

    When new things are invented for technology it usually makes things more easier for everyone. Also when new technology comes out it usually helps with science expiraments and sometimes helps to observe the expirament better. Science also comes out with things to make technology better and more advanced. SO to me technology and science work together and thats makes them simular.

    In natual science theres many combined sciences in it. There is Biology, Chemistry and phisics and there all studies of natual science. They focus on objects and laws of nature.

    A manipulated variable would be wrote and advised by a group of people greater than one. A responding one would be based on one person answering something not a bunch of people revising it.

    b. Explain the importance of communicating data? It is much easier to revise from alot of people. Its also for scientists to get there work out and help other scientists.

    First it goes through your own review. Then you let someone about the same age as you and he or she goes over and tests your work to corect things that are wrong.

    2. Ask Questions-combine your observations to form questions
    3. Develop Hypothesis-is a proposed answer to a question
    4. Test hypothesis with an experiment-use a controlled experiment which includes a manipulated variable and a responding variable
    5. Analyze data and draw conclusions-collect all your data and conclude if the hypothesis was supported or not.

    Peer review-a process in which scientists examine other scientists’ work. They give feedback to each other. They encourage comments, suggestions, questions, and criticism from other scientists. With peer review scientists are able to reevaluate their data to make it better to understand.

They all overlap each other because man did not have to take part in creating or “discovering” these sciences because they already existed without the help of man.     Analysis: See whether or not the hypothesis is correct or incorrectly. Facts are statements that are true to the scientific fields. Scientific Theories are statements that have not been proved right or wrong. Scientific laws are statements that are true and are laws that cannot be broken among the Scientific Fields. Scientific Models are diagrams/maps/characters/etc. that are used to help better understand something that is complicated or impossible to understand. The importance in safety in science is to insure that the students have a successful lab period and do not harm themselves in the process.

    Technology and science are related because technology is based on science. Its mostly based on physics, chemistry, biology and a few others. The two subjects rely on each other. Technology is basically science but in a new way. The major branches of natural science are physical science, life science, and earth and space science.     A manipulated variable is the variable that wants to change in the experiment. A responding variable is the variable the is expected to change in the experiment instead of the manipulated variable. The importance of communicating data is that anyone, even someone that doesn’t speak English, can read it. If you can exchange data, you can have your friends, or other people, can review your work. Peer review is important because other people can see your work and you can see what you did wrong.

    accuracy and precision are very similar things. they both mean your close to somthing, such as a target in a shooting range. accuracy is when you hit the same spot over and over again, and precision is when your close but not exact.

    When an advancement is made in science, it usually corresponds to an advancement in technology. They relate to each other because science is used to make technology. Science is the base, technology is the result.
    a. Describe the steps in a scientific method?
    Purpose: You’ve got a problem that you want to have solved. The purpose step in the scientific method is just a restatement of what you want accomplished.
    Hypothesis: This is where you write how you think you can solve the problem and what you think will happen. The hypothesis step is always written in the form “If ___________, then ___________.”
    Materials: This part of the scientific method is a list of everything you need to do in the experiment. Leave nothing out!
    Procedure: This section is where you list out in chronological order what you are going to do in your experiment. You should list everything that you are going to do, even if it seems obvious.
    Results: This is the section that explains what you observed during the experiment. You should give a complete accounting of all data that you take (sometimes this is referred to as the “Data” section).
    Conclusion: Where you determine whether or your the hypothesis was correct.

    Natural Science is defined by three sciences: life science, earth and space science, and physical science. Life science is referred to as biology and is the study of living things – where they originate, how they grow, reproduce, and change over time. Earth and Space mainly refers to geology and astronomy which examine the origins of earth and the universe and their structure. Physical science is the study of nonliving things such as matter and energy and their interactions. All three sciences overlap, so there is not always a clear line where one ends and another begins.
    Biology and physics and chemistry overlap in the study of plants. Paleontologist combine geology and biology to understand extinct animals of thousands of years ago.     Describe the steps in a scientific method.

    Scientists use the scientific method as a process to bring understanding to observations, find answers,and solve problems. The process is a plan that keep scientists organized and on track. The first step is to make an observation (An eggshell of a raw egg is fragile.). Second, ask a question (Can a raw egg withstand a 10 foot drop if protected?). Third, develop an hypothesis (A raw egg can withstand a 10 foot drop if protected.).Fourth,test the hypothesis and record results (do the experiments of protecting the egg and dropping it 10 feet.). Fifth, test further and record (protect the raw egg by different methods and drop again.). Sixth, Analyze the data recorded during the experiment.Finally, state whether or not the hypothesis is supported. Last, scientists can begin developing a theory
